After Chiang Kai-shek flees to Taiwan in 1949 and Mao is declared chairman of the Chinese Communist Party a newfound sense of nationalism is formed and the old ways are purged. 

In 1953 the first five year plan beings and industries and private businesses are nationalized. Land holdings were redistributed and collectivized. Almost half a million writers are sent to labor camps and many starve to death. 

Mass rallies were held where books and artwork were destroyed. Many Buddhist statues and representations were destroyed. 

In 1972 Nixon visit Beijing and opens a new relationship with the Communist Party in China.

Upon fleeing to Taiwan, Chiang Kai-shek took many historic pieces of art which can still be found in the National Palace in Taipei. Chiang Kai Shek died in 1975 when his son Chiang jing-guo would declare martial law in Taiwan until his death in 1987
